The Ministry of Health is the Government's principal advisor on health and disability policy. Our job is to protect the health of New Zealanders and, through leadership of the health and disability system, we help New Zealanders to live longer, healthier and more independent lives. We work with health and disability providers and manage a programme of work that supports the Government's priorities.
We're looking for a Clinical Coder to join our team! Clinical Coders in the Mortality Collection team analyse incoming medical data about diseases and injuries, as well as information about external causes of trauma, in order to ascertain and classify the underlying and contributing causes of death. They then input the cause of death codes into the Mortality Collection database. The data are coded using the mortality rules and guidelines from the World Health Organization's International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems, 10th Revision (ICD-10), and codes from the Australian Modification of ICD-10 (ICD-10-AM).
The analysis and reporting of cause of death, and other such information provides the foundation for the development of robust health policy and planning of future health services.
To be successful, you'll likely have clinical experience and/or a sound knowledge of medical terminology and disease processes. Prior experience in clinical coding using the International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems, 10th Revision (ICD-10), or the Australian Modification of ICD-10 (ICD-10-AM) is desirable but not essential for this position. Your strong communication skills will see you excel in this role, as will your ability to collaborate with your team members.
In return for the knowledge and attention to detail that you will bring to this position, the Ministry can offer a social, supportive, multi-cultural environment, and a commitment to development.
To apply for this position provide your current Curriculum Vitae and a covering letter outlining your background and your interest in the role. All applications must be made online.
