Vacancy on Southern Health and Disability Ethics Committee
Health and Disability Ethics Committees (HDECs) are Ministerial advisory committees established under section 11 of the Public Health and Disability Act 2000. There are four HDECs, based in Auckland (Northern A and Northern B HDECs), Wellington (Central HDEC) and Christchurch (Southern HDEC). The HDECs review health and disability research applications to ensure they meet or exceed established ethical standards.
On behalf of Hon Dr David Clark, Minister of Health, we are seeking applications/nominations for a non-lay member with experience in the provision of health and disability services on Southern HDEC. This member can either be a registered health practitioner; registered as a health practitioner at any time during the five years preceding their appointment; or involved or employed by an organisation involved in health and disability research.
The ideal candidate would also have an understanding of tikanga Māori.
This committee meets monthly. Members are sent agenda papers at least one week in advance of the meeting. Members may be asked to do additional work between meetings reviewing expedited review applications and amendments within set timeframes. You will need to have a computer and internet access as applications are lodged, assigned and viewed online on a secure portal.
In most instances, members may be paid up to two days per month for meeting/meeting preparation at $250 per day. However, there will be instances where meetings may take three days, or where expedited review work may be required. In these situations, members will be paid up to a maximum of four days per month at $250 per day.
HDECs are operational decision-making committees and meetings are open to the public. Interested applicants are welcome to attend a scheduled meeting to observe the process. Please see HDECs' website for more information and meeting dates: (www.ethics.health.govt.nz/about-committees/meeting-dates-venues-minutes).
